Nowadays, the fight against climate change and decarbonisation are becoming increasingly
more topical issues. In this context, hydrogen, which is considered to be the fuel of the
of the future, appears to be the ideal solution to most of the problems associated with
greenhouse gas emissions. Poland, in a special hydrogen strategy, envisages the emergence of a
new branch of the hydrogen economy and to strengthen the competitiveness of the entire Polish
economy. But what are the challenges and technological limitations we face, and
as well as what benefits could arise from green fuels?
Józef Węgrecki, Member of the PKN ORLEN Management Board, stressed that hydrogen cannot be used indiscriminately
use of hydrogen, but the fact is that it is used in large quantities in installations.
Węgrecki explained that hydrogen could be the fuel of the future, but we need to approach it in a
in a diversified way. Hydrogen will be particularly important in air transport, where the
green fuels will be a requirement from 2028.
Szymon Bylinski from the Ministry of Climate and Environment emphasised that hydrogen is a resource
which will support the electrification of all sectors of the economy. It will also
replace natural gas and other raw materials in production processes, including metallurgy.
Poland plans to achieve around 23% renewable hydrogen in industry by 2032.
Sebastian Wydra of the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Electrical Engineering explained that the Polish
Hydrogen Strategy defines targets until 2030, with an emphasis on the production of low-carbon
hydrogen based on renewable sources. In 2030, Poland wants to have 2 gigawatts of such
installations.
Barbara Adamska, president of the Polish Energy Storage Association, believes that hydrogen
can become an energy store for sectors that are unable to use electricity efficiently, such as heat
electricity, such as heating or trucking. Hydrogen can also be
also be used to compensate for grid instability in the case of renewable energies
renewables.
Green hydrogen could be a key element of Poland’s energy transition. However,
for this to happen, we need significant investment
as well as infrastructure development and implementation of hydrogen applications in industry and
transport.
Hydrogen as a new fuel and energy source has long attracted the interest of scientists and
entrepreneurs worldwide. However, the issue of its production and application is
complicated and requires the solution of many problems to eventually become widely available.
available. In Poland, many people are already working to develop hydrogen technology in order to
not only increase our energy independence, but also make full use of the potential of this raw material.
potential of this raw material.
Grzegorz Pawelec, a representative of Hydrogen Europe, drew attention to the financial aspects of
financial aspects of hydrogen production. So far, all research and
hydrogen production projects have so far been subsidised, which was connected with the high risk they entailed.
carried with them. Today, with the introduction of the Renewable Energy Directive, we can
expect an increase in investment in this sector, although for the time being this will be more of a
development rather than commercial investment. However, the price of hydrogen is crucial to the development of this technology, and because of its
its high price, government subsidies may be necessary.
Józef Węgrecki, an energy expert, points out the difficulties of producing
consumer hydrogen, which is still relatively expensive. Węgrecki believes that it is necessary
to look for new ways to produce hydrogen, for example from waste or from the atom. Z
turn, heavy transport, aircraft and ships will be powered by hydrogen in the future. The price of hydrogen
is crucial here, and subsidies may be needed at the beginning of its dissemination.
Another important aspect related to the development of hydrogen technology is
safety. Szymon Byliński from the Ministry of Climate and Environment emphasises that hydrogen
is safe as long as we follow the rules of its use. Consumers’ concerns
may be justified, but similar concerns also apply to other substances, such as
petrol, yet we use them every day.
The use of hydrogen as a fuel can help reduce pollution
transport pollution, which accounts for around 60% of pollution in major cities. Sebastian
Wydra points out that -Hydrogen-powered vehicles solve the problem of charging time,
as refuelling with hydrogen is similar to traditional refuelling. The own contribution of Polish
of science and enterprises in hydrogen production should reach about 55% in 2030.
very high.
Two days filled with meetings, more than thirty debates, round-table discussions, motivating power speeches, dozens of Polish and foreign experts – this is how the largest environmental event in Central and Eastern Europe – the TOGETAIR 2023 International Climate Summit – is presented. The event takes place at the University of Warsaw Library on 20-21 April. TOGETAIR 2023 has received prestigious patronage from Polish and foreign institutions, including the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki.
