Decarbonisation of supply chains and last mile logistics

Decarbonisation of supply chains and last mile logistics

The decarbonisation of supply chains is a topic that is increasingly coming up in discussions on
sustainability. However, as experts point out, there is a lot of talk about it, but still little is being done,
to actually reduce the CO2 emissions associated with freight transport. What measures are being taken in this regard
companies are taking in this area, are told by representatives of the Danone Group, DPD Poland and the UN.
Grzegorz Bobek from the Danone Group emphasises that it is crucial to choose contractors who act
in line with sustainable development. In the case of transport, attention should be paid to local
suppliers, as well as trying to transport fewer unnecessary items and maximise the use of cargo space.
space to the maximum. Bobek points out the limitations of the Polish market, which is mainly dependent on wheeled transport
by road. However, as he points out, rail is the greenest form of transport, but its profitability starts
from transport over 1,000 km.

Kamil Wyszkowski of the UN, on the other hand, draws attention to the need to move away from internal combustion engines to electric
electric, especially for rail and air traffic. However, as he notes, the global trade system
trade system is based primarily on maritime transport, so it is necessary to look for alternative
solutions, such as hydrogen or electric engines. Wyszkowski stresses that if we want to reduce
CO2 emissions, we need to change the paradigm that is the global supply chain.

Artur Jop of DPD Polska talks about the company’s efforts to develop bicycle transport. DPD Polska
has been involved in the development of bicycle transport for almost 10 years. Thanks to the use of electric bicycles
cargo, couriers can make deliveries at almost the same level as by motorised transport,
while saving roads. The company currently has 56 such bikes at its disposal, and by the end of the year it plans to
expand its fleet to 100 units. As Jop notes, 80% of parcels in city centres are delivered by bicycle.

And as summarised by Michał Wolański from the Warsaw School of Economics: experts agree that decarbonisation of supply chains
is possible, but requires complex measures. It is necessary to focus on the use of
rail and the development of bicycle transport, followed by electrification. This is a complex task, but
important for the future of the environment and the economy.

Two days filled with meetings, more than thirty debates, round table discussions, motivating power speeches, dozens of Polish and foreign experts – this is how the largest environmental event in Central and Eastern Europe – the International Climate Summit TOGETAIR 2023 – is presented. The event takes place in the Warsaw University Library on 20-21 April.  TOGETAIR 2023 has received prestigious patronage from Polish and foreign institutions, including the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki.
