A NET ZERO FUTURE. TOWARDS A ZERO AND LOW-CARBON ECONOMY

A NET ZERO FUTURE. TOWARDS A ZERO AND LOW-CARBON ECONOMY

Today, environmental issues are increasingly pressing. As a society
we must act quickly and effectively to prevent the catastrophic effects of climate change. Precisely
this is why opening the TOGETAIR 2023 economy mode at the University of Warsaw is so important – it
it enables us to focus on research and development of eco-friendly solutions that will allow us to
to tackle climate change. As the Chancellor of the University of Warsaw, Robert
Grey: “Universities have a unique role in shaping society. Our students will create the
the world of the future and decide how it will function”. This is an important reminder that it is we as a
society have enormous power and influence over how our world will be.

It is important that science drives change in thinking and action. As Chancellor Grey said: ‘We are committed to
us to implement environmentally friendly solutions. Only science can provide answers on how to prevent impending
catastrophe”. It is science that will allow us to find the answers to many environmental questions
environment and create solutions that will allow us to tackle climate change.
The Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine remind us that change can be rapid and unpredictable.
In such circumstances, it is important that we have access to adequate resources and know how to use
space in a responsible manner. This is why it is so important that universities such as the University of
Warsaw University to conduct interdisciplinary research in the field of environmental and consequent
social change.

As Chancellor Grey said: ‘We want to shape the future, we feel responsible for it. We influence
change and create a better tomorrow”. It is we as a society who have a say in what our world will look like
our world in the future. That is why it is so important that we act quickly and effectively to prevent the
catastrophic consequences of climate change.

A net-zero future is the challenge facing the world’s major economies today.
Poland is also in the process of taking action to achieve this goal. The discussion on this topic is not
easy, but there is no denying that industry must adapt to the new requirements. In an interview with
Roman Młodkowski of ‘Biznes24’, representatives from various sectors talk about the challenges they
they are facing and the directions in which they are heading.

One of the topics that comes up in the discussion is the issue of costs associated with investments in green
energy. Marcin Michalski, director of the investment project financing department at PKO Bank Polski,
stresses that it is an investment with an upfront cost that will pay off. As a bank, they offer green bonds and
loans, they finance RES or the electromobility sector. In the case of sustainable projects, customers can
enjoy certain benefits if they complete environmental projects. They encourage their customers that their
related to green transformation are ambitious and important for society and the environment.

Artur Warzocha, Vice President of the Management Board for Corporate Affairs at TAURON, adds that we have to incur certain costs,
to invest in renewable energy sources. This investment will bring a benefit in the end, it will have a direct impact on the
on the quality of the air we breathe and will put downward pressure on energy prices. TAURON has already ceased
operations of three mines already, and Tauron Wytwarzanie will be handed over to the National Agency for
Energy Security Agency, which means that the company will only have renewable energy sources.
Instead, they will buy coal-based energy as long as it is necessary, and the limit is a year of

TAURON plans to spend more than PLN 1 billion on investments in RES.
Rafał Rudziński, CEO of Robert Bosch, emphasises that decarbonisation will be achieved, among other things, if more than 200
million homes will be powered by, for example, heat pumps. Demand for green technologies is huge. There remains
question of time, which passes very quickly. We pay attention to technology neutrality. We have in the world
2 billion passenger cars with which something has to be done. Will there be electric or hydrogen engines, or perhaps
powered by synthetic fuels?

Zuzanna Rudzińska-Bluszcz: It is worth noting that more and more countries around the world are deciding on ambitious climate goals
climate targets and investing in the green economy. In Europe, we already have the Green Deal, which envisages, among other things.
In Europe, we already have the Green Deal, which, among other things, aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. In Poland, there are also positive signals, such as
Tauron’s decision to switch to renewable energy sources. However, in order to achieve our climate goals
we need far greater commitment from government and business.
Mariusz Błasiak: The State Forests are also investing in sustainable development. We carry out numerous projects,
which aim to protect nature, increase sustainable forest management and reduce the emission of
of greenhouse gases. An example is our investment in trees growing in urban areas,
which increase the amount of greenery in cities, reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air and increase the comfort of the
residents.

One of the challenges we face is the fight against drought. We are therefore investing in projects related to
water retention in forested landscapes, which aim to increase the availability of water for plants, as well as
preventing soil erosion. All these projects contribute to sustainable development and have a positive
impact on the environment.
In conclusion, the interviewees agree that investments in the green economy are necessary to ensure the
the future of our planet and economy. However, to achieve our climate goals, we need greater
commitment from government and business. Investment in renewable energy sources, sustainable development, and the
combating drought and soil erosion are essential for sustainable development. It is worth remembering that ecology and business
can and should go hand in hand, and green investments can benefit both the environment and the
economy.

Two days filled with meetings, more than thirty debates, round-table discussions, motivating power speeches, dozens of Polish and foreign experts – this is how the largest environmental event in Central and Eastern Europe – the TOGETAIR 2023 International Climate Summit – is presented.
