Efficient or green transport?

Efficient or green transport?

Efficient or green transport? This is a question that has been challenging the transport and
mobility. Must efficiency and productivity in movement go hand in hand with environmental protection? Can
Can both be achieved at the same time? The answers to these questions were sought by transport and
environmental protection during the 4th International Climate Summit TOGETAIR 2023

Kamil Wyszkowski, Executive Director, UNOPS Representative in Poland of the UN Global Compact Network
Poland, points out that the development of electric cars is inevitable and that money is already on the table
table. “When it comes to air transport there will be a large number of chargers for planes. Continental flights already
can be operated by electric planes,” he adds. At the same time, Wyszkowski stresses that the poor knowledge of
managers is a barrier to the development of green mobility.

Michal Pyzik, Traffic Modelling and Forecasting Coordinator of the Central Communication Port (CPK),
argues that investment in high-speed rail and the integration of the car freight system with the
rail freight transport will contribute to reducing the number of journeys and time
spent in the car. “Thanks to them, there will be almost 50 million fewer trips per year, we will also spend 40 million
hours per year less in the car,” explains Pyzik. Longer journeys will be made faster, which will prove to be
also beneficial for business, which will have the opportunity to use rail transport, which can
be more efficient than air travel.

Anna Brzezińska-Rybicka, Director of the Department of Statutory Authorities, Strategy and Communication, Spokesperson for the
Spokesperson for the International Road Transport Association (ZMPD), on the other hand, emphasises that
environmental performance and efficiency do not always go hand in hand. “Transporting goods and passengers in an environmentally friendly way is
costly and requires investment. For many industries, such as industry, trucking is essential and here
there are not many options to choose from,” he explains.

Łukasz Kujda: In the case of aviation, we are talking about increasingly efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft, but this is
still a drop in the ocean of needs. In this case, the only solution is to reduce the number of flights, by
choosing greener modes of transport, such as rail. Furthermore, attention should be paid to
the development of water transport, which is not very popular in Poland but can be very environmentally friendly.
It is worth investing in the development of inland transport, which is ecological and efficient.

Anna Brzezińska-Rybicka: We should not have to choose between efficient and ecological transport.
A well-designed transport system can be both efficient and environmentally friendly. W

of public transport and cycling. In Poland, unfortunately, there is still a low level of investment in
infrastructure for cyclists, which is a barrier to the development of this form of transport. We should invest
in the development of public transport, including a network of fast trams and buses, in order to increase the convenience and
comfort for passengers.

Bartosz Piłat: There is no unequivocal answer to the question of which transport is better – effective or
ecological. It is important to choose solutions that are economical, but at the same time take care of the environment.
environment. In the case of road transport, we should encourage the use of vehicles with
low-emission vehicles such as hybrids and electric cars. It is worth increasing the share of public transport
and invest in infrastructure for cyclists. In the case of air transport, we should pay
attention to the development of electric aircraft and the use of biofuels. All these solutions
have their advantages and disadvantages, but it is important to act with the environment in mind.
