GOZ and value chain in operational models and business strategies

Every second of my speech, two truckloads of plastic entered the ocean – this is how Kamil Wyszkowski summarised
his speech Kamil Wyszkowski, Representative of UNOPS in Poland, UN Global Compact Network Poland
during the third panel of the environmental scene of the 4th edition of the International TOGETAIR Summit, whose
the theme of which was the closed loop economy (COSE).

The rate of waste production is very high, therefore it is necessary to change our model of
production and consumption of goods. How does the idea of a closed-loop economy for raw materials and goods change our
world? How does the quality of regulation affect the functioning of recycling and the waste industry as a whole? How do we involve
how to involve all actors in the circular economy in GOZ?

Andrzej Losor, Board Member, Sales and Marketing Development Director, Górażdże emphasised that in the
cement industry, careful planning of the entire value chain is important. In this way, it is possible to minimise the amount of
production waste and at the same time reuse it in the production process. He also noted,
that an important role is played by the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, which help in the process of
management and optimisation of the value chain.

Anna Borys, McDonald’s corporate affairs director, outlined the initiatives the company is taking towards a
towards a circular economy. She noted that it is crucial for them to minimise the amount of
waste and using materials that can be recycled. McDonald’s is implementing a number of
solutions related to recycling and reducing plastic consumption. One such solution is the introduction of
paper straws instead of plastic straws.

Kamil Wyszkowski, Executive Director, UNOPS Representative in Poland, UN Global Compact Network
Poland, stressed that sustainability and a closed loop economy are not only ethical issues,
but also bring financial benefits to businesses. He noted that many companies which have decided to
to adopt the GOZ model have gained in reputation, gained new customers and increased their profitability.
All panellists unanimously stressed that the closed loop economy is not only a matter of ecology
and ethics, but also a future-oriented business strategy. Taking care of the value chain, minimising waste and
application of new technologies are key elements for achieving business success in the
in the long term.

Anna Borys, McDonald’s corporate affairs director, pointed out during the debate that the company has the ability to
to process difficult packaging, such as film-coated or greasy packaging. As a result, McDonald’s is able to
able to recover paper fibres from them and process them into full-flavoured products. The company currently
recycles 500 tonnes of packaging per month and is increasing this pool all the time.

As Anna Borys pointed out, there is huge room for innovation in this area. The company is showing that it is
possible to process difficult packaging and recover valuable raw materials from it. It is constantly trying out
various solutions to make the recycling process even more efficient.

One of the challenges companies face is consumer trends, such as takeaway sales. However,
according to Kamil Wyszkowski, Executive Director, UNOPS Representative in Poland, UN
Global Compact Network Poland, the biggest problem is the lack of an effective global mechanism to
recycling of plastics. According to him, 93% of the plastics that are somewhere are lost, mainly in landfills
legal, semi-legal or illegal in countries with lower levels of development. Action must therefore be taken,
to increase the efficiency of the recycling system, which will require changes in the regulations governing the production and
processing of plastics.

Kamil Wyszkowski also stressed that economies of scale affect the price of products, using the example of paper
straws or compostable agricultural film. Within the European Union, it is necessary to push out of the market film
contaminated or plastic fishing nets. It is worth noting that it is more profitable to discard it than to
fished out, which generates environmental damage. They should be banned or made more expensive, which may require
introduction of appropriate regulations.

Górażdże Cement S.A., the most modern cement production facility in Europe, is a leader in decarbonisation
in the industry. In 2030, the company plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50% compared to the
According to Andrzej Losor, board member and director of sales and marketing development
Górażdże, this is the most ambitious target in the industry. The company hopes to achieve this goal by replacing
fossil fuels with alternative energy sources, the use of decarbonised raw materials and the
energy transformation.

In the context of GOZ (closed loop economy), Ewa Janczukowicz-Cichosz, representing LPP, pointed to the
the problem of clothes recycling. Only 1% of clothing undergoes this process, the majority ending up in waste
mixed waste and, at best, is incinerated. This is why LPP has decided to focus on developing the recycling of
polyester and in the future also plans to recycle multi-material garments.

Anna Borys, McDonald’s corporate affairs director, highlighted the role of consumers in building the GOZ.
Without consumer education, there is no closed loop, and informed consumers are the pillar of many activities
building GOZ. Kamil Wyszkowski added that education is key to achieving collective awareness and
facilitate business decisions with customers, the supply chain and decision makers.

Slawomir Golonka likened environmental activity to the work of a man who, in his twenties
does not pay into Social Security for his pension, but for those who used to work for it. According to Andrew Losor,
the next step in building a GOZ is to open a concrete recycling plant. The company hopes to
stop polluting forests and lakes with rubble, which will certainly help to protect the environment
natural environment.

Two days filled with meetings, more than thirty debates, round-table discussions, motivating power speeches, dozens of Polish and foreign experts – this is how the largest environmental event in Central and Eastern Europe – the TOGETAIR 2023 International Climate Summit – is presented. The event takes place at the University of Warsaw Library on 20-21 April.  TOGETAIR 2023 has received prestigious patronage from Polish and foreign institutions, including the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki.
